The project challenge
To envision, execute and pivot the setup, refinement, and rethink of multiple banking services that deliver the value a Colombian bank promises, while co-creating them as transversal microservices for other platforms (banks) owned by the same financial holding, Grupo Aval.
My personal challenge
(From Nov/2018 to May/2021)
To deconstruct my relationship with Money, Technology, and Design practicing my “work activism” by interacting with people as a Senior UX Designer at ATH - Aval Digital Labs, a digital experiment owned by Grupo Aval driven by their digital transformation agenda, soon rebranded as ADL Digital Labs.
My role
Understand and translate how to design and deliver a digital experience between various digital channels with complex data constraints.
Led multidisciplinary and multi-organization teams through creative guidance to define, analyze, and iterate the hypothesis and deconstruction of designing for better relationships between banking clients and their money + traditional companies and their digital experiments.
Timeline
2019
- We launch the first Responsive Website for Banco Popular.
- We transitioned old customers to a new basic experience that begins evolving sprint after sprint/release after release.
2020
- We envisioned a mobile app as a guarantee/level of security for all parties and support the availability of the services even when the web-based platforms are not available, just as an analog wallet.
- We added an independent Hybrid Mobile App designed to enhance the basic digital transactional experience based on available digital identification methods to ultimately create incentives for verified usage on a monthly basis.
2022
- The digitalization of their retired clients increased by 50%.

Context
Once upon a time, there were multiple digital experiments created by an arrangement between a French insurance company named CNP Insurance and the Brazilian, Caixa Econômica Federal Bank.
In 2016, with the help of many global talents, one of the experiments was launched as a Startup in Brazil. A year later, its twin Startup was preparing its launch in Colombia, while a not-so-twin Startup was being launched in France. Sharing a common audience curiosity and the zeitgeist’s empowerment insurtech promise, each country validates its hypotheses as independent companies with branding personalization for the Brazilian, French, and Colombian requirements, while trying to encourage collaborative practices between all organizations.
To practice and share design within multidisciplinary teams and projects, my main challenges in this role were...
To reposition the role of design within the Startup, and translate the multiple innovation visions to actionable design strategic activities.
UX/Service Design the company’s insurance products for SMEs and Colombian citizens through a 100% digital know-your-customer process (identity validation, digital risk management, and money laundering system).
Experimenting with verified user interactions from different devices/platforms using minimum viable experiences while having to guarantee compliance reports for financial supervision and
Learning to use Design Thinking to improve insurance policy literacy.
This is one of the biggest daily newspapers in Colombia.
In 2016 the newspaper kicked off the exploration of the implementation of its first digital paywall. My role was to explore and design the experience and story for the end user. To translate it to the various actors and stakeholders in their value chain.
We envisioned, ideated, prototyped, planned, and play how the business could orchestrate itself to deliver a seamless experience co-created with its users, the context, and the live content taking into account all its customers and their life cycles.
My preferred design projects of the time were:
- Open Innovation challenge within the Newspaper’s Journalism School.
- The “User Zone” concept with persuasive and gamification strategies that will enhance digital monetization.
- The progressive registration data collection.
Envisioned to personalize the experience of content consumption and maybe increase ability, motivation, or activate triggers to enhance reading levels in the country, prototype digital journalism monetization, among many other things.
Context
In 2015 Portafolio, the Colombian economic and business newspaper owned by EL TIEMPO Casa Editorial, was redesigning its website and expecting to understand how to deliver complex data as financial indicators to a very wide set of digital and analog readers.

My role
- To facilitate creative workshops and deliverables based on the company and editorial innovation strategy.
- To lead User Research for product and branding strategy.
- To create digital brand voice & tone guidelines.
- To design rapid low and high-fidelity deliverables for newspaper events/forums and financial opportunities.
- To design information architecture, user flows, and wireframes for delivering the digital content of Portafolio.
Context:
ADN was born in 2008 to become the first free newspaper for Bogotá, Medellin, Cali, and Barranquilla citizens.
Challenge:
How to co-create the brand's mobile experience by understanding the variables that could influence the experience of the delivery partners, consumers, and the editorial, tech, commercial, and business teams. Through multidisciplinary roles and commercial team training, we improve the touchpoints for the advertisers’ experience and validate the investment's viability by making a user experience diagnosis of the digital product and its site navigation patterns.

User experience design of Alo Novias magazine website.
- Information Architecture
- Paper Prototyping

Context
In 2013, as a graduation project, I decided to explore the health dimension through the potentiality of digital technologies and behavior change strategies. I end up creating a service that promoted healthier lifestyles using the users' emotional reactions to designed triggers during a knee recovery treatment.
Why it’s important?
Because this project was the reason I got my first design job ever and became my second design project to be published in a book. (Ok...of my university, but still a nice recognition for presenting one of the best graduation projects of the year.)
How it was?
Long story short, I “Fly on the Wall” for 2-3 weeks in a knee surgeon consulting room and used other observation tools with patients recovering and preparing for a knee surgery. To end up recognizing interesting patterns and their common friction surrounding motivation, ability and triggers for completing physiotherapy. The most painful “must-do” of a truly succesfull recovery.
What was about?
It started with a robust discovery and analysis to be able to identify an essential problem that directed me to a digital solution (where the competitive arena was showing huge potential).
In this case, a patient with a knee condition, using technology to ensure a greater recovery using the levels of information he/she/they receive and exchange. Therefore, the app's objective pretended to become an information tool for the patient and a tracking tool for the doctors and caregivers, creating a communication channel between them.
